A Year of ARCs

A Year of ARCs

For anyone who doesn't know, there is actually a way to get early access to books that haven't been released. I finally took the plunge in 2024 and set up a profile on NetGalley, a website described by themselves as 'a platform for booksellers, librarians, educators, and media professionals to discover and recommend books'. In exchange for an honest review, you can be approved by authors and publishers for early access to books. Despite launching my profile I never actually got round to fine tuning the details to make me appealing, but in May 2025 I decided to go for it, and I am SO glad I did.

Since being approved for my very first ARC, I have been approved for 23 books. Some of these have been my highest rated reads of the year and from really famous, bestselling authors, and I have absolutely loved them. Some of them I have DNF'd, as they just haven't turned out to be for me. Both are fine, and the honesty is the best part of it. However don't get me wrong, it isn't all fun and games, because I have been rejected for 11 books too!

I don't think I have been in this game long enough to say what my "top tips" are for a good NetGalley profile, but I can certainly tell you what's in mine. I predominantly talk about why I love to read and the types of books, but it is also helpful to tell prospective authors or publishers where you will review. Having multiple platforms is helpful, and I tend to try and post my reviews not just on NetGalley, but on Goodreads and Amazon too (when published).

I have also been accepted onto an ARC team for Lyra Parish, which was seperate to NetGalley. Lyra has written some of my favourite books of the past few years (her Billionaire Situation books being top of the list), and I now automatically receive her books early by being part of her team. NetGalley definitely gave me the confidence to apply to be a member.

I currently have 2 outstanding reviews and 2 requests pending, I love the anticipation and love the rush I feel when I get confirmation of being approved. It makes me want to drop everything to read. If you fancy trying to get access to books early and are willing to put in the effort, definitely have a think about if NetGalley is for you. It's the best thing I ever did!

Love, Beth x
